How to set a world border and spawn point

A world border keeps players inside an area you can manage, and a clear spawn point gives new players a good first minute. Both are quick to set up with a handful of commands, and doing them early prevents problems later: an endless map to back up, a spawn buried in a cave, or new players wandering into nowhere.

Why set a border

An unlimited world sounds generous, but it costs you:

  • Every chunk a player explores is saved, so the world folder keeps growing, and backups grow with it.
  • Exploring far from spawn forces the server to generate new terrain, which is expensive. See How to pregenerate your world with Chunky.
  • Very far from the centre, coordinates become large and some games and mods behave strangely.

A border of a few thousand blocks is plenty for most communities.

The world border commands

Run these as an operator or in the console:

/worldborder center 0 0
/worldborder set 10000

The first sets the middle of the border. The second sets its full width, so 10,000 means a square from 5,000 blocks west to 5,000 east of the centre, and the same in the other direction. That is a radius of 5,000.

Other useful commands:

CommandWhat it does
/worldborder getShows the current size
/worldborder add 1000Makes it bigger by that many blocks
/worldborder set 20000 600Grows it to 20,000 over 600 seconds, smoothly
/worldborder damage amount 0.5Damage per second per block beyond the border
/worldborder damage buffer 5A safe distance outside before damage starts
/worldborder warning distance 10Warns players when they are this close

Changing the size over time looks much better than snapping it, and it gives players warning. It is how you expand a border during a season.

Do the other dimensions too

Check the border in each dimension. Rules about whether the border applies the same way to the Nether and the End vary between versions, so run /worldborder get while standing in each one and set it explicitly if it is not what you want. A mismatch is a common reason players escape a border through the Nether.

Choosing a spawn

The world spawn is where new players first appear, and where players return if they die with no bed.

  1. Stand where you want spawn to be.
  2. Run /setworldspawn.

Then decide how spread out new players are. The gamerule spawnRadius controls the area around spawn in which players can appear, with a default of 10. A bigger number spreads them out, which helps on a busy server. See Minecraft gamerules explained.

For each player's own respawn spot, /spawnpoint sets one, and beds set one automatically.

Protect spawn

A busy spawn gets griefed first. The vanilla setting spawn-protection in server.properties stops non-operators from building near spawn, and the default is 16 blocks. For serious control, use regions as described in How to protect your builds from griefing.

Build a welcome area

New players' first minute is the one they remember. A few simple additions help:

  • A sign or board with the rules and your Discord link.
  • Clear paths to a starter area or tutorial.
  • A safe area where nothing can hurt them, such as a protected region.
  • Warps or a menu, if you use plugins like EssentialsX.

Pre-announce border changes

If you plan to shrink or move the border, warn players first. Anything outside the new border stays in the world file, but players cannot reach it, and builds out there are effectively lost to them. Give people time to move, and back up before you change a border. Creating and restoring backups covers how.
